Veranda Decking - A New Alternative In Decking Material

Veranda decking is a composite decking material that has a reversible finish. It has a combed finish on one side of the decking and a wood grain finish on the other. Although it is called veranda decking, you can use this decking to build a gazebo or any kind of patio or deck. The prices are comparable with other types of composite decking and you have three colors to choose from – gray, cedar and redwood. In addition to buying veranda decking, you can also purchase the railing you need for your deck in the same color and material.

Check with Home Depot for veranda composite decking prices. At the present time, this is the only store that sells this type of composite decking. Veranda decking comes in three different lengths – 8, 10 and 12 feet. You can also buy the screws you need in the same color as the veranda composite decking you choose for your deck. This decking material is the perfect one to choose for a deck that will see a lot of traffic and different climate conditions. It will not diminish in appearance with a lot of people walking on it, dragging pation furniture over it or through the elements of weather.

The thing that you will notice with veranda decking is that the color will lighten over time. This is not the result of a defect in the veranda composite decking but it is a natural occurrence due to exposure to sunlight. The decking has to have time to weather and this usually takes two to three months. After this length of time, you won't notice any further fading or lightening of the color of your composite decking material.

Veranda decking has to go through a mellowing period. If you buy the decking at reduced veranda composite decking prices, you should not worry that the reason for the lower prices was that there was something wrong with the material. During the first two or three months, you may notice tan or greenish hues coming through the veranda composite decking, no matter what color you choose. There will also be slight color variations in the pieces because of the components of the composite decking – wood fibers and recycled plastic. Although there is a warranty with the veranda brand of composite decking, color variation is not included in this warranty.

When you buy veranda decking, you should buy all the material you need to complete your deck at the same time. In fact, experts with installing veranda composite decking recommend that you buy extra because of the color variation that you may encounter. The extra pieces will allow you to ensure that your deck is all the same shade of the color you choose. If you do run out of veranda decking before the project is completed, you may have difficulty getting the exact color to match because runs of the manufacturing of this product can produce slight differences in the colors.

The Ins And Outs Of Diesel Generators

Generators are used for electric power generation. Two categories of diesel generators are basically available in market- one is portable generator and the other is standby generator. Diesel Generators are mostly used to make sure that electric appliances can be run when there is a power failure. Standby diesel generators are mostly used in homes and offices and installed outside the house or office building. These are plugged in home wiring or electric power circuit. These can automatically detect power failure and start supplying power with in moments. Portable diesel generators are used on sites where there is much less supply of electric power and they can only run few small appliances like refrigerators, televisions and turnaces.

Diesel generators use comparatively less fuel and thus are more fuel efficient than power generated by gasoline or natural gas. For every liter of fuel consumed, diesel generators can run 2 to 3 times more efficiently than natural gas engines. There is no need of frequent maintenance for diesel engines, but gasoline engines need more frequent maintenance. Most diesel engines designed with water-cooled engine up to a speed of 1800 rounds per minute. This makes sure that the engine is durable, and makes it most dependable of all generators.

Unlike other natural gas generators and gasoline generators, diesel engines are very safe to use because they work on direct injection principle and they do not have any spark plugs. The unavailability of spark plug keeps them safe from fire. Diesel generator has a better shelf life. This is the least flammable source of fuel, hence can be stored for more time.

The fuel for the diesel generators is available at all gas stations and can be collected in comfortable cans. Main problems in case of diesel generators are: it is very hard to start them in cold weather, they are noisy and emit more smoke. Home diesel generators may cost $ 800 for 4 kilowatt to $10000 for a 15-kilowatt depending upon the rating, voltage consumption, quality and brand name. Diesel generators can also be used in industrial purposes. For industrial purpose they are available in range of 500 kilowatt to 2000 kilowatt.

Fuels such as diesel, gasoline, natural gas, or propane can basically power home generators. Some models of diesel generators also designed with multi fuel capabilities. The fuel choice of will depend on availability of fuel during emergency times.

Home Winterizing Tips To Help You Save Money

As colder weather approaches, homeowners feel a different kind of heat - high energy bills and costly repairs, often due to damage from moisture in the home.

Often the culprits are inefficient windows and doors that compromise the home's "envelope" - the fixtures and surfaces that together help regulate indoor temperatures and provide protection from the elements.

Any leak in the home's envelope hits the pocketbook hard and fast. Energy lost through windows alone can account for 10 percent to 25 percent of a household's heating bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

"Now is the time to spend a little extra effort inspecting your home to make sure fixtures are in the best possible condition for combating cold, wet weather," said Joyce Richter, windows expert for Jeld-Wen, a window and door manufacturer. "Look for warping or cracks that indicate repairs or replacements are needed."

Jeld-Wen offers these additional tips:

* Use your senses to detect leaks. Hold a lighted candle near closed windows and doors. You'll see immediately if cold air is infiltrating indoors or warm air is seeping out. Feel for cold spots and look for condensation on cold surfaces. Inspect seals and weatherstrips.

* Take advantage of passive solar heating. Use insulated window coverings and close them at night. Open south-facing window coverings during the day.

* Understand how energy efficiency is measured. The most important energy efficiency rating is U-factor. This is the amount of heat flowing through a window. The lower the number, the more energy-efficient the window is.

* Consider Energy Star-qualified products. Appliances and other household products that have undergone rigorous testing will save money on energy bills during all seasons. The Environmental Protection Agency states that a typical household can save up to 30 percent on energy bills, about $400 per year, by selecting Energy Star-qualified products.

* Research the new generation of high-tech building materials. Composite materials, such as energy-efficient fiberglass doors, have become more widely available to homeowners. These materials protect against the forces of nature that cause the most worry: temperature changes, severe storms, moisture and insects.

Consumer Trend Alert - Environment-Friendly Home Improvement Flooring Products Gain Mass Appeal

One of the first things home owners think of when embarking on a home improvement project is pulling up that dusty, stained and frayed old carpet. The next step is deciding what to put in its place - new carpet or some other type of flooring.

A trendy new craze sweeping the country is to replace existing carpet with environmentally friendly flooring such as reclaimed wood, linoleum, cork or bamboo. Such types of flooring are not only helpful to the environment, but are also coveted for their exquisite beauty, texture and form. People are fast realizing the dangers of using products for the home that can be detrimental to the environment and to the residents who live in the home.

Jumping on the bandwagon, architects, builders and decorators are suggesting flooring products that protect the environment and the people who live and work in the buildings.

Advantages of Choosing Environment-Friendly Flooring Over Carpeting

If you've ever pulled up used carpeting in a home or other heavily-trafficked area, you've probably been aghast at the debris and filth hidden in the carpet and padding. The truth is that no matter how fanatical you are about vacuuming and shampooing your carpet, residue, mold and mildew will accumulate in the fibers beneath. The carpet then becomes an allergen magnet, hording germs that can affect humans and pets who come in contact with it.

Besides the advantage of avoiding allergens, the durability and beauty of wood or other environmentally correct floorings remains undisputed. It is easily cleaned and comes in a wide variety of patterns and colors to fit any décor.

Linoleum is resilient and is made from renewable substances of the earth or recycled remnants, but linoleum itself cannot be recycled because of the glue used to install it. Still, the long life gained from using linoleum has made it a popular choice for homes and offices.

The use of "reclaimed" wood found in old buildings such as barns, hotels or railroad cars is an emerging trend across the country. While the obvious character and patina of these woods are lovely and desirable, the cost can be somewhat prohibitive at around $30 per square foot. Furthermore, shoppers need to be careful to ensure they buy from a trusted source. There is also the danger of running out of wood before the project is completed if you aren't sure to measure correctly and buy the right amount of materials Newer products, such as cork and bamboo are excellent choices to use in buildings that have energy savers such as radiant heat. Besides saving on energy costs, cork and bamboo can be bought for much less than wood and still have the "green tag" of being friendly to the environment.

Transform Your Home or Office with Cork or Bamboo Flooring

The rapid disappearances of our forests and rainforests have led to the research and development of new products in flooring and the reemergence of some old favorites. Cork and bamboo are forerunners in this endeavor.

Cork flooring has been popular in the United States since the 1950s. The avocado and gold colored carpet of the 70s temporarily replaced its prominence in the flooring market, but cork has now found new acceptance in environmentally conscious homes.

Anti-microbial and cushiony soft, cork is an ideal choice for parents who want to keep their homes free of allergens and also enjoy a tranquil existence by diminishing noise.

Bamboo flooring is both resilient and beautiful. Its colors, ranging from natural to amber, create an excellent background for any style of furniture or accessories. The durability of bamboo makes it a superior choice, and because of its rapid growth, bamboo usage helps to preserve our forests.

While bamboo is lightweight, it is as hard as oak, maple or redwood and has the added advantages of expanding and contracting less. It comes in tongue and groove planks for ease of installation. What's more, bamboo's natural imperfections lend an air of exclusivity to its look.

Jump On the "Build Green" Bandwagon When You Build or Renovate

Almost every decorating or architectural magazine that you see on the stands contains at least one article about being environmentally conscious when you build or renovate.

Indeed, there are many types of flooring that you can select to conserve energy and preserve our forests and other resources while avoiding excessive costs or future problems. Choosing the appropriate flooring for your home or office is a major decision - one that you will probably live with for a long time.

Choose wisely and "build green" whenever you can. It's a great way to show that you care about our earth and its future.

Patio Fire Pit Magic

Here is a nice fire pit story. A few weeks ago I visited a friend that had just moved into a new house with his family, with not much of a budget he wanted to make the most of his few first months in the new place, he wanted to add something to the house that would give it a personal touch and add an identity to the place, so that the whole family could feel that this is actually the new home and not a replacement for the old house.

The house has been built about 40 years ago, it was in a good condition, the kitchen and the living room has been redone a couple of years ago, and the old lady that lived in the house took excellent care of it, there was not much to be done, or in fact, not much important work to be done. One part of the house was a little let down and that was the patio, and I immediately thought about a patio fire pit when I saw the front of the house.

With a nice, imagery setting from the patio the only thing that was needed is something new to bring some excitement to the place, and that would make everyone enjoy an evening on the patio. I knew form my experience that many people use a patio fire pit as a way to spruce up an otherwise drab looking social setting. A fire pit can be used as the centerpiece of a patio.

I talked with my friends and asked if they will be interested in a patio fire pit, they were interested, but clearly not excited, I took it as a mini project to finish this work before I leave, and considered the essentials for the patio fire pit, space is an issue because a fire pit will be putting out a lot of heat, so if the patio is small, you cant buy a large unit. A simple, small patio fire pit will be a nice addition to this patio. In terms of practicality I needed to think about the sitting area, so the fire pit can set it in the middle of the sitting area, and people will not get too hot.

When we finally went to buy a fire pit, my friends started getting excited, and when all the family helped install it the excitement peaked. I spent the first, gala evening of the patio fire pit with my friends, and left the next day, ever since that day I am getting weekly photos of different social activities and family meetings in the new, much improved part of the house, I think they can thank the patio fire pit.

Five Tips On Buying Water Products For Your Home

Water is the essence of life. Wise are those who incorporate water into their daily lives and environments. When purchasing water products for your home, your success can be enhanced by keeping in mind five basic features. Taking the time to understand and apply these five simple factors will save you both time and money, and will let you experience maximum pleasure and usefulness from your new water product acquisitions.

The first topic we should always consider is why are we seeking to purchase water products? Are we seeking increased health benefits, such as we might receive from owning a pool or a hot tub? Perhaps in our mind we can almost hear the sounds of water, the comforting bubbling sound of an indoor fountain or the gentle slosh and splash of tiny birds in a bird bath. We should be clear about our desire so we can better match our purchases to what we are hoping to obtain. We also need to remember to not limit ourselves, since there is nothing that says we cannot combine art and practicality, usefulness and beauty, in the water products that we add to our environment.

As we move close to making an actual purchase, we will need to check again, to measure our desire against our reality. If foremost in our minds are the health benefits of warm, swirling water and arthritis, we do not want to become lost in our pursuit of a three-tiered, cascading fountain. If our needs are for stress relief, an eight-inch tiny water display may not meet all of our expectations. Knowing what our goals are can make all the difference in our purchases making us happy for a long time to come.

The second feature to consider is size. It sounds simple but it is something we sometimes overlook, as we become excited to purchase those water products that promise to bring us both pleasure and increased health benefits. We need to first dream, and then adjust our images to fit our lives. If we live in a small garden home, no matter our love for swimming, an Olympic size pool is out of the question. We might want to turn our desires to something smaller, such as a hot tub or even a water fountain for our entry way.

If we are seeking to furnish a single room, again, our consideration of a small space to be utilized is important. We love water, we know we care about both its health and artistic qualities, but we must also realize we need to choose something that we can place within an already-furnished room. We might select a small desk-top fountain or even a decorative spring-water dispenser.

The third feature, after defining our desires and the sizes we can accommodate, should probably be financial. What can we truly afford, and how can we best maximize our purchases? In this area, we are lucky, since we live in an age of unprecedented opportunities to save money, through the use of the internet. Not only can we use the internet to make cost comparisons and therefore make wiser purchasing decisions, we can actually order via the internet, often savings ourselves a significant amount of money. And we do not need to limit these purchases to small items anymore, since such large items as water beds, hot tubs and above-ground pools, can all be ordered, often at considerable savings, from the comfort of our own computer.

Within the arena of economy, we need to think of our desires, and the best way we can afford to allow these desires to materialize. If we are thinking of spending a large amount of money, we should explore both financing and outright purchasing options. Waiting a few months, until we can afford to purchase outright, may, in the long run, save hundreds of dollars in interest costs. Or shopping for a low-interest loan may allow us to have our desire right away, paying for it slowly over time. Just as we strive to match our desire to the size of our environment, we should also match our investment to our ease and ability to pay for it.

Fourth, we should consider maintenance. Is what we are purchasing going to require daily or periodic care, and if so, can we do the maintenance, or will we need to hire someone else to do it? What will the maintenance costs be and are we prepared financially to assume them? No matter how beautiful the desire, an unclean pool or a dirty water fountain quickly lose their appeal. On the other hand, with careful planning, maintenance need not be an obstacle, as long as we are prepared and aware of its implications.

Last in our list of features to consider as we bring more water into our home, is the flexibility of what we are buying and how we can use it. From a table fountain to a hot tub, we are not limited to a single use. The hot tub, for instance, when not being used for recreation or healthy exercises, can be decorated with floating flowers and candles. It can become an artistic center piece to a small home party or get-to-gather. Our table fountain can be moved to a different area of our home, and surrounded with pictures of a birthday celebrant, complete with tiny stars scattered about, and packages holding birthday surprises. Our most important thing to remember may be the very idea that we are not limited, in either our choices or our uses of water products. Matching this knowledge while paying careful attention to the main features of purchasing water products brings our environment closer to being the haven we know it can be.

Installing your new bathroom tiles

Before laying the bathroom tiles, start by removing your old carpet and carpet strips. Use a cutoff saw to make room for the bathroom tile to slip under the doorjambs. Place a portion of the tile pattern starting at the doorway to set up a centerline and then strike a chalk line.

Cut the bathroom tile with a wet saw or tile snips. Work your way up one side of the room and down the other. Allow 1/8" for grout lines; spacers can be used for consistency. Mix the thinnest using an electric drill with a mixing bit.

Mix small amounts at a time, adding water slowly to maintain the right consistency. Mix enough to lay down a dozen or so bathroom tile at once, and be ready to go to work as the thinnest dries quickly using a trowel to apply the thinnest to the floor.

When the bathroom tiles are all in place and some-what dry, use a grout saw to scrape the excess thinnest out of the joints where the grout will go. A shop van will clean most of this up, but use a wet sponge to get the surface clean. Once dry, begin applying the grout with a rubber trowel.

One more sponge cleaning will be required to get up the film once the bathroom tiles is dried completely. It's recommended to apply a grout sealer after about 48 hours or so to help avoid any staining problems that occur during normal use.

Curio Cabinet Display And Care Tips

Curio cabinets are the best way to display your curios and create focal points in a room. They are showcases to hold art objects, memorabilia, collectibles and items that share a common theme. Any curio cabinet, however, just will not do. It is advisable that the right showcase cabinet should be chosen carefully or even custom-made in order for it to be able to highlight the contents in the best possible way.

1. The Size

Curio cabinets can be small wall-mounted showcases and are recommendable to use if you have limited floor space and they can be also as large as 7 ft. x 7 ft. which are good to have if you have enough space and a lot of items to display.

2. Design
You can choose a curio cabinet made of teakwood, white cedar, rosewood or even plywood depending on your budget, taste and your living room's theme and ambience. For example, if your living room has antique furniture, then it is better to opt for curio cabinets that are made of hardwood and are intricately carved with brass inlay and other elaborate embellishments. Consider also the number of shelves you will need for the cabinet and the material it has to be made of. These can either be made from clear glass or wood. As a style option, you can alternate glass shelves with wooden shelves to break the monotony. You can also use smoked glass.

3. Display Tips
Curio cabinets can have a single glass door, a double glass door or no doors, at all. It is recommended, however, that you choose those with doors to prevent dust from setting to your displays. If you have children or pets in your home, consider fastening the glass sides of your curio cabinet with a lock to prevent items from falling and breaking. Aside from these design considerations, you can also consider getting a curio cabinet with a mirrored back for visual expanse feeling especially if your living room is not spacious. The mirror does not only reflect the light in the room but also helps give an all-around view of the items displayed in the cabinet. To make cleaning easier such as vacuuming and dusting, consider installing casters underneath the cabinet.

4. Maitenance
- Use a damp cloth for wiping
- To polish the wood frame, use a hardwood polish every six months
- For the glass sections and panels of the curio cases, use a damp newspaper to wipe it
- Cloth, no matter what kinds, leaves residue and never, wipe the glass surface dry because dust can settle on it which can cause some scratches
- To clean the curio pieces inside the cabinet, clean it with a damp cloth, soft brush or vacuum cleaner once a week
- For items made of crystal and glass, wash these in running water once every 3 to 6 months and wipe them with a dry soft cloth

5. What To Display
The color of the room plays a role in determining the type of object you should display as the base color. Such that glassware, white color based art objects and glassware will look great if the living room is predominantly white in color. If you have a small curio case and you have smaller items, then you can display your items individually. For those with curio cabinets, you can group together similar items of color, theme, or size together in 3s, 5s, or 7s. These items can be displayed alongside each other in a straight line or in a semi-circular fashion. To avoid a cluttered look, make sure that you leave some spaces on the shelf.

For collectors, a large curio cabinet can be used to display all collectible items over the years and it can be the focal point of the living room. As a tip, you can display collections together according to their color, the year of the collection and their size. Make sure that the bigger items are located at the back of the shelf and the smaller ones are in front so that all items displayed are visible.

6. Lighting
Lighting in a curio cabinet can make a person looking at the items displayed delighted because light does not only enhance the visual appeal but it also makes the entire collection have a dramatic effect. When considering lighting, choose soft focus lights to be installed in the center of the top shelf. Avoid installing lights on the corners or sides of the cabinet to make the light highlight the pieces evenly without making a shadow. In order to prevent the focus light from glaring, it is usually the case that it is hidden with a wooden panel on the shelf's front.
